Calculating the pitch of your roof is Essential

In order to be able to calculate what size slate is suitable for your property, you need to first know what the angle of the pitch is. Although we always recommend you employing a professional roofer to do this for you, here’s three easy ways to measure the roof pitch in degrees.

Method 2

Internal Loft rafters- Safest method

You will need to download a “roof pitch app”! There are plenty available in the app store. This works by leaning your phone against the rafter surface and it will then show you what degree your pitch is. for example 29.6 degree pitch.

This method is based on the fact that the rafters visible with in the loft haven’t been altered externally. To increase or decrease the pitch. In principle the pitch should be the same whichever side of the rafter you measure.

Method 3

Measuring off the Barge Board

You will need to download a “roof pitch app”! There are plenty available in the app store. This works by leaning your phone against the Barge Board surface and it will then show you what degree your pitch is. For example 29.6 degree pitch.

This again is a relatively safe way to get an idea of what the angle of the pitch is.  Only do this if it is safe to do so. It also worth pointing out this only works on existing roofs that need to get re-slated. You can visually see whether the Barge board is running parallel with the existing roofing material i.e slates/ tiles so you will know if the measurement is relatively accurate.
